The Zuni people of New Mexico are known for theirfetishes—small, hand-carved animal figures made of natural stone. According to Zuni belief, these figures possess guiding and protective powers.

Traditionally, among the Zuni, humans are considered the last and least complex beings in the universe. Therefore, they seek power from animals, which possess qualities we lack or wish to enhance.

When it comes to the object itself, the natural is valued above all else; a stone that already resembles an animal in its raw form is believed to possess the strongest power. The less the artist needs to carve the stone to bring out the animal, the more of its original energy is preserved.

According to belief, a fetish is an animal transformed into stone, in which the animal’s heart remains.
