Mining slag, or slag stone, is a byproduct of iron production in blast furnaces and smelting furnaces. It was formed when iron ore was smelted with charcoal, and the blue hue results from slow cooling, which creates a glass-like, iridescent structure. Cobalt and chromium are responsible for the blue hues.
