Banded hematite / bloodstone ore, BIF; banded iron formation
It is said that during the evolution of the Earth, divalent iron in contact with oxygen was transformed into trivalent and precipitated / deposited as hematite (iron ore)
The banding consists of hematite and quartz deposits. When the miners started drilling out the hematite with water, the water turned red, hence the name bloodstone in Sweden.
