Banded hematite / bloodstone ore, BIF; banded iron formation
It is said that during the evolution of the earth, divalent iron in contact with oxygen was converted to trivalent and precipitated / deposited to hematite (iron ore)
The banding consists of hematite and quartz deposits. When the miners started drilling out the hematite with water, the water turned red. That is why the hematite has got the name bloodstone in Sweden.
